g. HMMWV. Direct the prisoner to sit in the back seat directly behind the front passenger seat. Place a
seat belt around him. Enter the vehicle after the detainee. If you are alone, sit in the back seat behind the
driver. If you have an assisting escort, direct him to sit in the back seat behind the driver. You will sit in the
front passenger seat. If you are armed, keep your weapon on your side away from the detainee. If there are two
prisoners, direct one prisoner to sit in the front passenger seat and the other to sit in the rear seat directly behind
the front passenger seat. Fasten each detainee's seat belt. Sit in the rear seat directly behind the driver. If you
are armed, keep your weapon on your side away from the detainee. Reverse the loading order when unloading
the prisoners.
h. Ambulance/Van. After you have searched the vehicle and briefed the driver, load the vehicle. Prisoner
first, escort, and then the driver. You will have the driver secure the doors. Because he has to secure the doors,
he will board last. Have doors secured from the outside, if possible. Remember, you must always maintain
control of the prisoner. The design of the ambulance will determine the position of the stretcher. In an
ambulance, you always place the detainee on the stretcher. The escort will always be seated between the
prisoner and loading doors (in ambulances with rear doors only). If an ambulance (remember this applies to a
van also) with side doors is used, position yourself about halfway between the doors as shown in the slide.
With a van, use the same preparations as with other vehicles. The position of the prisoner is dictated by the
design of the van.
i. Open-Bed Truck. After searching the vehicle, briefing the driver, and setting up emergency signals,
have the driver lower the tailgate. The armed escort loads first, then the prisoners, and last, the unarmed escort.
If you have two unarmed escorts, the loading procedure will be the same. Escort, prisoner, escort. If you are
the armed escort, hand your weapon to the other escort before you mount the truck. The mounted escort will
recover his weapon from the escort on the ground. The armed escort will be positioned behind the cab facing
the tailgate. This position is dictated by the wearing of the weapon. Direct prisoners to sit on alternate sides of
the truck as they enter. Leave space between the prisoners and the armed escort, as well as between the
prisoners and the tailgate. After positioning the prisoners, the unarmed escort mounts the vehicle and will be
