The rear area, as shown in Figure 1-2, begins at the rear of the main battle area (MBA) and extends
through the communications zone (COMMZ). The rear area has few combat forces, but it contains
many support units. It also contains command and control headquarters along with other critical
facilities.

After Operations. Rather than focusing on the size of the threat, these threat levels focus on the nature
of friendly action needed to defeat the threat.
To provide structure for and to describe the threat, three levels of threat activity are used. They serve
as a guide when planning rear operations.
o Level I:
Enemy controlled agents activity.
Terrorism.
Sabotage by enemy sympathizers.
