In addition to location, data concerning the time of an accident is significant. The time of an accident
means the time of day, month, and year. If a pattern of accidents centers on a particular place at a
particular time, adjustments to enforcement can reduce the accident rate at that time and place. Of
course, other studies, in combination with accident reports, may suggest underlying causes that can be
eliminated.
The cause of an accident is also a relevant factor.
There are a number of causes that can be
eliminated if they are anticipated.
Note that the sample spot map in Figure 2-2 indicates the type of accident also. The type of accident is
another significant element included in any accident report.
