INTRODUCTION
1. General: The importance of preserving evidence cannot be stressed too much.
From the moment you take custody of an item of evidence, it becomes your
responsibility. You must take every care to preserve the evidence's original
integrity as nearly as possible. The supervisor must be assured that you and
the evidence custodian maintain the evidence's integrity. The custodian signs
for and is responsible for the evidence's security.
The supervisor's and
evidence custodian's concern for the security and accounting for evidence may
sometimes determine the eventual outcome of investigations.
The cases are
often long and difficult. Later judicial proceedings may also be affected by
the supervisor's and custodian's duty performance.
